Can ChatGPT replace writers?

ChatGPT, since its inception, has taken the world by storm. Launched by US-based AI (artificial intelligence) firm OpenAI, in which Microsoft has announced significant investment, is witnessing rapid adoption across businesses and individuals. Currently, companies are using ChatGPT to write codes, copywriting and content creation, customer support, and preparing meeting summaries among others. Many reports suggest that many US companies are actively using ChatGPT for various operations. This is also making many people redundant, as workers are getting replaced. Given the revolutionary nature of this AI tool, many ChatGPT alternatives are getting launched. Google has come up with its experimental conversational AI, Bard. Chatsonic, Jasper Chat, YouChat, Character AI, OpenAI Playground, Bing AI, and many others have been launched as ChatGPT alternatives.

Given so many new launches of chatbots and their overwhelming adoption, it is nothing but natural to think that writers will soon be replaced by ChatGPT kind of chatbots. The answer to this question is tricky. As disruptive technologies like ChatGPT creates new waves, it is likely that many writing tasks will be outsourced to AI tools. But writers will not be redundant. And the reasons are:

  1. Good only for repetitive content:

Suppose, you need to create a brochure on a real estate property for showcasing the various features of the project to potential clients or you want to develop a product brochure, enumerating the features of a mechanical tool. Then, the ChatGPT kind of AI tool is very useful as it produces repetitive content on the same topic. The user can then change the content a bit with product specifications. However, imagine a situation where the user has to write a news story after getting reactions from several people, or a banking professional has to create a presentation, taking into account much client-specific information. In both instances, AI chatbots are not evolved to produce customised content as per users’ requirements. Though ChatGPT can write fantastic poems, which used to be the exclusive domain of human beings, it is likely that poems with repetitive content on the same theme will be produced by these chatbots. It can, then, lead to the issue of plagiarism.

  • Many organisations have banned usage:

As per a Bloomberg report, JP Morgan has cracked down on the use of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the workplace. “When we talk of the high-accuracy task, it is worth mentioning that ChatGPT sometimes hallucinates and can generate answers that are seemingly convincing, but are actually wrong,” Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in a note recently. So, what seems to be true as information generated from such AI tools, can be very well false. No wonder many universities, colleges, and schools across the world including the US, France & India have banned the usage of ChatGPT for generating AI-led content.

  • Google ranking may suffer:

The biggest search engine Google doesn’t like AI-generated content. It usually flags those as spam. So, if you are writing to generate good organic traffic to your website or want to generate sales leads through your content, such content may not satisfy your requirement.

However, ChatGPT and other AI-powered chatbots are powerful tools to solve myriad problems in our daily lives. For any writing assignment, these tools can also be very useful. Without replacing human beings, ChatGPT can be supplemented for multiple writing assignments. AI so far has not evolved to replace writers but who knows what the future holds!
